Cortisol, Coffee, and Comfort?

For many people, the idea of forgoing that morning cup of coffee or tea seems like sacrilege. Yet if you struggle with an ongoing health condition that can be aggravated by stress such as tinnitus, IBS, chronic pain, or anxiety, you might want to consider doing just that.

There is a stress hormone called cortisol that while necessary for many life functions, in excess can aggravate pain and inflammation in the body. One study I saw (link below) detected higher concentrations than normal of cortisol in the hair samples of people who reported elevated levels of tinnitus distress.

Cortisol naturally peaks during the first 30 minutes after we awaken to get us ready for the day ahead as it has a stimulating function. However, this increase can also lead to an aggravation of your stress-related symptoms as well. For that reason, you may wish to avoid caffeine first thing in the morning so as not to dump one stimulating substance on top of another. Coffee and tea do have recognized health benefits, but you may wish to enjoy them a bit later in the day.

If you would like to learn more about natural strategies such as using hypnosis and mindfulness to lower your distress so that you can increase your comfort and happiness, call/text me at (732) 714-7040 to set up a free discovery call.
